Angus Teeton, a local Eastern Cape legend is raising funds to get Patrige Chimwendo, a talented young athlete based in Port Elizabeth, to Iten, Kenya.
Not only is Iten a town with one of the most unique cultures in the world, it is home to a large portion of Kenya’s world class athletes and attracts thousands of professionals and world record holders from all over the world.
Angus explains that from his experience in Iten, a 2 month training camp there can change an athlete’s life forever, and he hopes to offer this experience to Patrige, one of PE’s most well know and loved local athletes.
Why Iten, Kenya?
Altitude: The high altitude makes it a great place to put in huge volumes of cardio work with less stress on joints. Thus, lowering chance of injury. One’s body becomes better at absorbing oxygen from the air and benefits continue once you return to sea level.
Community: Running is what it’s all about here. To run 3 times a day is the norm, and while everyone around you is doing it, and there are no other distractions, training becomes your sole focus. The Kenyans train in large groups and will pull weaker athletes along with them. Over time your form adjusts to that of the crowd, running efficiency increases and performance shoots up!
Soul: Seeing a town alive in the way that Iten does, does something to one’s heart. Athletes returning from camps have renewed determination and drive towards what they do.
The funds raised will go towards the bulk costs of a two month stay in the Running Mecca.
